Heron/ Shadow Shots

Great Blue Heron and shadow facing left

The heron and its shadow are stalking tasty treats in shallow water. The shadow leads the way.

Great Blue Heron  and shadow facing right

Hmmm. Nothing that way, so the hungry heron turns around. The famished shadow follows silently.  Neither the heron nor the shadow can see through the thick pea-green floating weeds. So both move slowly, listening for sounds, feeling vibrations.

Great Blue Heron and shadow facing left again

OOPS! You missed it! Notice the dirty beak.  The heron just caught and swallowed a yummy sunfish. Doesn't the shadow look totally satisfied?

That is so beautiful, the shapely bird with its slender beak - and the following shadow! You stayed quiet in the reeds, and were rewarded with this beautiful hunter. Sweet!

Very cool shots, EG. Perfect photography. The shadow has a lump where the sunfish ended up. LOL MB

The green goo would keep me from eating anything! But, then, I'm not a heron!

IF SHADOWS

If shadows could jump,
How high would they go?
As high as the moon?
Does anyone know?

If shadows could weep,
How long would they cry?
As long as it takes
To climb to the sky?

If shadows could laugh
And tell funny jokes
Would you take them home
And say, “Get this, folks!”?

If shadows could wed,
Would they prefer you
Or somebody else
To promise, “I do”?

Hidden Shadows Come on over if you have time today!!

Perhaps that shadow IS bigger by one fish in the final photo!

I prefer to see herons places like this rather than on our pond (eating the fish we stocked for US to catch, not the birds!).

I'm always so intriqued with shadows. If you get a chance, google America's Got Talents - The Silhouettes. They have an amazing shadow act. It's really, really cool.

You must have been very patient standing in the goo to get these great shots.

I love the story you told us, and I enjoyed being a witness to his tasty meal.
