Great Blue Heron and shadow facing left
The heron and its shadow are stalking tasty treats in shallow water. The shadow leads the way.
Great Blue Heron and shadow facing right
Hmmm. Nothing that way, so the hungry heron turns around. The famished shadow follows silently. Neither the heron nor the shadow can see through the thick pea-green floating weeds. So both move slowly, listening for sounds, feeling vibrations.
Great Blue Heron and shadow facing left again
OOPS! You missed it! Notice the dirty beak. The heron just caught and swallowed a yummy sunfish. Doesn't the shadow look totally satisfied?

Great pictures! ~burp~
Oh beautiful heron, great macro photos, and shadow! You must have been very quiet to come so close like that..
These are wonderful photos. You have as much patience as the heron, I think:-)
That IS a really neat shadow capture. :) I love the color of the heron!
You make such fine highly detailed shots of these birds. Excellent work and it's so much fun to look at these shots!
What terrific shadow shots! Love the heron and, yes, I think I did hear a "burp"! Marvelous detail! Hope both of you have a great weekend!!

Fabulous - I love herons! I spend a lot of time looking for them on the river near here.
Splendid shots of the pretty and very big bird :)
Great, I do enjoy watching these patient hunters.
my favorite bird to see and watch. so regal, simply beautiful. love this series. thanks for sharing EG. happy SSS to you.
I love this post - it made me smile. The heron`s shadow is even more beautiful than the heron! Have a great weekend!
That is so beautiful, the shapely bird with its slender beak - and the following shadow! You stayed quiet in the reeds, and were rewarded with this beautiful hunter. Sweet!
You crack me up, EG. A nice way to end my day. Lovely heron shots, satisfied shadow and all!
Very cool shots, EG. Perfect photography. The shadow has a lump where the sunfish ended up. LOL MB
The green goo would keep me from eating anything! But, then, I'm not a heron!
IF SHADOWS
If shadows could jump,
How high would they go?
As high as the moon?
Does anyone know?
If shadows could weep,
How long would they cry?
As long as it takes
To climb to the sky?
If shadows could laugh
And tell funny jokes
Would you take them home
And say, “Get this, folks!”?
If shadows could wed,
Would they prefer you
Or somebody else
To promise, “I do”?

Shadows on this door and this
we have herons here in Missouri. I love them. Love to watch them fish.
Great story to go with your Heron! That is some algae on the water!
Haha--to the first comment...and loved your thinking/words!
Cool! What a magnificent bird...and excellent captures.
Very cool shots of the bird.
Loved being a witness of sorts to this Heron's meal!! Loved the shadows-you heron stalker you....
; )
What a beautiful heron! Loving the satisfied shadow in the last pic. Thanks for stopping by!
Okay, from heron in I'm going to try my darndest to get heron shots as good as your heron shots with heron shadows also.
WOW! You weave a great story with these shadow shots EG. I love the curves of that heron's body in that last one. Fantastic!
Peace.
Great set of shots of this beautiful heron!
He is in the thick of it! Great photos, and story. :)
Nice shadow shots.
Regards!
Aren't they the most fascinating, incredible bird? As are your photos!!
Hidden Shadows Come on over if you have time today!!
Perhaps that shadow IS bigger by one fish in the final photo!
I prefer to see herons places like this rather than on our pond (eating the fish we stocked for US to catch, not the birds!).
I'm always so intriqued with shadows. If you get a chance, google America's Got Talents - The Silhouettes. They have an amazing shadow act. It's really, really cool.
What a handsome chap and so obliging letting you get these great shots.
You got some wonderful captures,
EG!
You must have been very patient standing in the goo to get these great shots.
I love the story you told us, and I enjoyed being a witness to his tasty meal.
Thanks for stopping by!
Beautiful!
great post, it´s not easy to be a heron.
Super shots! I've never been able to get that close to a heron. Great shadow in that last one.
