Bluebird box on fence, Kawartha Lakes, Ontario
Driving along the back roads of Kawartha Lakes (and many other rural areas in Ontario) it's fairly common to see bluebird boxes hanging on fences next to farmers' fields.
Until a few years ago, bluebirds were in serious decline due to the use of pesticides and loss of habitat, in part caused by English sparrows and starlings that vie for the same cavities bluebirds like for raising families. The bluebird population in Southern and Central Ontario is now stable, and bluebird boxes in rural areas is cited as a major reason.
I am linking to Friday Fences here.

Happy day****
This photo almost looks like Texas. We have bluebird houses on our back fence.
Yay for the bluebirds! We need to take care of such creatures. Nice rural pic!
At first I thought that was a mailbox, great shot though.
Lovely shot! Yay! I adore blue birds, so did my grandpa. Every time I see one, I think of him!
Same thing going on out here. Birdhouses on fences and barns. We have 5 birdhouses on our barn and Bob and I just---well last Fall--hung some out in the woods. MB
We have two bluebird boxes in our yard and I want more. Nice photo!
I've never heard of such a thing but it's a great program and nice to know that bluebirds are coming back!
I just saw blue bird boxes on a recent hike - some blue birds, too.
Bluebirds are one of my favorites and both of our boxes have occupants!...:)JP
same issues here in the midwest US. I don't know, but would like to think, that bluebirds have made a comeback here.
I missed this, and thought I had clicked all the links...I never see a bluebird here in the city, but do out in the country. There are just oo many of the sparrows around....
